Constructionarium Australia has recently completed its inaugural Pumped Hydro (Water Battery)(hereby referred to as Pumped Hydro) in Brisbane, marking the city’s first operational pumped hydro structure. But, why Pumped Hydro?
In the coming month, Constructionarium Australia will host two additional Pumped Hydro builds in Melbourne and Brisbane, made possible through our valued partnerships with BMD - our founding partner and major sponsor - and Melbourne Water.
Pumped hydro is a form of energy storage that plays a key role in Australia’s energy future to balance consumption and the overall electrical grid. It works by pumping water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during times of excess energy supply. During periods of high demand, often in the evening, the water is released back through turbines, generating electricity. This process helps balance energy supply and demand, ensuring grid reliability.
As Australia transitions towards more renewable energy sources, pumped hydro has gained attention for its ability to provide large-scale, long-duration energy storage. Australia’s topography makes it well positioned for pumped hydro development and is already leading globally with projects like Snowy 2.0 in New South Wales, one of the world’s largest.
Constructionarium Australia is committed to providing a safe, hands-on learning environment where young professionals can develop essential skills in project management, leadership and teamwork. Our Pumped Hydro builds exemplify this mission, offering participants the opportunity to gain real-world experience in one of the most exciting and rapidly growing sectors of the industry.
These projects wouldn’t be possible without our incredible sponsors and partners. The design, structure and geotechnical services have been made possible by GHD, Platypus Engineering, Fulton Hogan, Keller, CPB Contractors, BAM, Ghella and UGL joint venture.
